Just two days after abruptly canceling Florida’s planned in-person July bar exam, bar authorities in the Sunshine State threw candidates another curve ball: moving the date of the newly announced online bar exam.
The Florida Board of Bar Examiners clarified on July 3 that the abbreviated one-day online bar exam will be given on Aug. 19 instead of the previously announced Aug. 18 so as not to conflict with the state’s primary election.
“It is important that every citizen in Florida be assured that they are able to vote in the upcoming primary election, whether by mail, early voting, or in person,” said David Reeves, chairman of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners in announcing the change. “With the administration of the examination in an online format, we are able shift the date without impacting the grading schedule.”
The Florida Supreme Court issued a July 1 order canceling the two-day exam, which was planned for July 28 and 29 in Tampa and Orlando, citing rising COVID-19 cases in the state. Bar authorities had come under mounting criticism in recent weeks for moving forward with an in-person test, which opponents said was putting the health and safety of examinees and proctors in jeopardy. The replacement online exam will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions and three essay questions.
Other jurisdictions have followed Florida in canceling their in-person July bar exams in recent days. Tennessee on July 2 pulled the plug on its test, directing candidates instead to its previously scheduled Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 backup exam. Then on July 3, Texas followed suit. Examinees in the Lone Star State may now choose between an in-person Sept. 9 and 10 exam, or an online exam given Oct. 5 and 6.
