Ohio saw another uptick in new COVID-19 infections as the number of new daily cases increased by 968 Sunday over the previous day, the Ohio Department of Health reported.

The total number of cases in Ohio is now 57,151. On Saturday, the state reported an increase of 926 to 56,183 cases.

There were four more deaths from the virus reported Sunday, increasing the state’s virus death toll to 2,911.

Hospitalizations increased by 61 on Sunday, raising the total number to 8,172 cases.

Six more people were admitted to the intensive care units Sunday, boosting that total number to 2,058.

Franklin County, by a wide margin, continues to lead the state in coronavirus cases. On Sunday, the state reported that Franklin County has had a total of 10,271 cases.

That is an increase of 248 new cases over Saturday’s total. Cuyahoga County, which is the greater Cleveland area, has 7,724 cases, the second highest number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio .

In response to the climbing virus numbers, at least two more area cities are considering making face coverings mandatory indoors in public places and businesses.

Upper Arlington City Council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday to consider emergency legislation to require masks in indoor public spaces. Council members will meet remotely and broadcast the session on the city’s website at upperarlingtonoh.gov and on its Facebook page, @CityofUA.

Granville Village Council in Licking County has also called a special meeting for 7:15 p.m. Tuesday to discuss a potential mandate for the use of facial coverings.

If approved, they would join Columbus, Bexley, Cleveland, Dayton, Dublin (effective Monday) and Grandville Heights among some other Ohio cities that have adopted face coverings. Cincinnati’s face covering requirement goes into effect Thursday.
