ELKINS — After seeing active COVID-19 cases in Randolph County take a turn for the worse last week, the numbers have trended back down this week, according to the Randolph-Elkins Health Department.

Last week’s active cases jumped up to 114 after the numbers had been in decline each week for an entire month. According to the health department, this week’s active cases have again fallen under triple digits, as a total of 98 current active cases had been reported in the county Monday.

Tucker County has the lowest number of active cases among area counties with 42. That number is down just three from the 45 that were reported last Monday.

Upshur County and Barbour County both saw increases in active case numbers this week, however.

The Upshur County Health Department reported 144 active cases on Friday, an increase from the 132 cases reported five days earlier on Monday. The health department in Upshur County is conducting COVID-19 tests on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Barbour County reported 64 active cases on Monday, which is up from the 62 that were reported last week.

Testing is ongoing in Barbour County, as the Myers Clinic offers tests every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. except on Wednesday. The Belington Clinic offers tests the same days from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., while Broaddus Hospital is conducting tests from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Barbour County Health Department offers tests Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Junior Volunteer Fire Department offers testing Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

The state numbers appear to be trending up as well, with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources confirming 2,046 new cases in the Mountain State since Friday.

There are currently 6,940 active COVID-19 cases statewide and there have been a total of 4,450 deaths attributed to coronavirus in West Virginia.
