Antonio Brown announces his plan to retire...again - NBCSports.com

One of the biggest needs for the Washington football club entering the 2020 season is at wide receiver, and that need became even more exemplified when second-year pass-catcher Kelvin Harmon had surgery to repair a torn ACL last week.

With Harmon out of the picture for the 2020 season and Washington's uncertainty at the position, many wondered if the team would potentially inquire about free-agent wide receiver Antonio Brown. The former Pittsburgh Steelers star is the most talented free agent wide receiver remaining, and Brown has even spent part of his summer working out with Washington QB Dwayne Haskins.

However, any chance of Brown and Haskins linking up in a real NFL game appeared to go out the window on Monday, as the wideout spontaneously announced his intention to retire from the NFL...again.

Monday marked the second time Brown has announced he's stepping away from football in the last year, as the wideout tweeted last September that he would be retiring from football due to frustration he had with the league overall. This time, Brown cited the concerns of playing during the ongoing global pandemic as his reason for hanging up the cleats.

Had Washington wanted to sign Brown, there's no telling that it would have been a smooth process. The wide receiver comes with a significant amount of baggage and would likely face discipline from the NFL had he signed with any team.

Over the past 18 months, Brown has been a part of three different organizations. Each time, the divorce was ugly and full of drama.

Earlier this offseason, Washington head coach Ron Rivera was asked about the potential of bringing in Brown. While Rivera didn't fully dismiss the idea, it was clear that the head coach wasn't planning on signing the talented yet troubled wideout.

"If you bring in a veteran right now, you're going to stunt the growth of somebody young," Rivera said. "I know who Antonio Brown is, I know he's a great player. He's an impact guy. He's also a veteran guy, and we've got some young guys that we need to find out about. Again, that's kind of the approach, we want to see what we have."

The chance of Washington signing Brown never truly appeared to be very high. After Monday, the entire idea of Brown in the Burgundy and Gold looks like it can be put to rest.
