Flames ripped through an Escondido home twice on Friday, once in the early morning and again in the evening after an apparent hot spot from the first blaze flared up, fire officials said.
The initial fire erupted for unknown reasons around 2:40 a.m. in the garage of the home near Via Rancho Parkway and Bernardo Lane, Escondido fire Battalion Chief Andre Paredes said in a news release.
When the first fire crews arrived, the garage was fully engulfed and flames were spreading to the home, prompting the firefighters to call for additional help, Paredes said.
Flames destroyed the garage and everything inside it, while the home sustained major damage in the area near the garage, plus moderate smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the dwelling, according to the fire chief.
The family escaped the blaze unharmed, but one pet cat died, Paredes said. Several others pets were unharmed.
Firefighters remained at the home until about 8:30 Friday morning attempting to make sure the blaze was fully under control, Paredes said. But around 6 on Friday evening, the blaze apparently flared back up.
“There was probably something in a void space, and with the heat of the day, it heated up all that wood, and then the wind kicked up,” Paredes said over the phone Friday night.
The first fire nearly destroyed the home, so the second fire did not cause a significant amount of additional damage, Paredes said.
“We’re going to be here awhile taking care of this,” Paredes said around 9:30 p.m., adding that once it was completely extinguished, they’d leave a crew to watch it overnight and ensure no hot spots flared up again.
Paredes said the cause of the initial fire remained under investigation, as did the cause of the second blaze, even though it was assumed to be a flare up related to the earlier fire.
