CALISTOGA, CA—A wildfire in the Wine Country has burned more than 36,000 acres, destroyed some 113 structures and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in Napa and Sonoma counties. The Glass Fire ignited on Sunday at 3:50 a.m. near Calistoga and was fanned by dry wind gusts. The subsequent Shady and Boysen fires merged with it, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection or Cal Fire.

One of the wineries consumed in the blaze was Chateau Boswell, established in 1979 by the late Richard Boswell and is currently operated by Susan Boswell. It’s one of a handful of family-run private wineries in the region.

The area where the Meadowood Napa Valley resort sits was evacuated on Sunday as the Glass Fire threatened it. At least one of the main resort buildings that houses the Michelin three-star Restaurant at Meadowood was on fire Monday and was not believed to have been saved.

Luxury resort Calistoga Ranch was badly damaged by the Glass Fire, and its caretakers are awaiting news on the extent of the destruction. Calistoga Ranch staff is working closely with Cal Fire as it continues to monitor the site.

All Glass Fire evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect. Napa County’s current wildfire evacuations and road closures are located in a map which is searchable by address.

An evacuation center is open at Crosswalk Community Church, 2590 First St. and Napa Valley College at 2277 Napa Vallejo Highway, both in Napa, CA. Individuals who are seeking shelter are reminded to bring a face covering, practice good hygiene habits and adhere to physical distancing. The centers will be open only to individuals who are impacted by the fire evacuations and an address verification will be in place.

Residents are asked to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of emergency personnel. Area residents looking for clarification on evacuation information are encouraged to call the Cal Fire information line at (707) 967-4207.
