College football: Games scrapped again for Navy, Air Force - Against All Enemies

For the second straight weekend, the football teams from the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy won’t play because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Navy’s home game against Memphis has been postponed “due to positive COVID-19 cases” at the academy “and the ensuing quarantine of student-athletes.” Memphis and Navy do not share a common by week through the remainder of the regular season. Still, the American Athletic Conference “will consider a number of options with regard to the playing of the contest,” according to a press release from Navy Athletics.

Football activities remained paused at Navy. The Mids haven’t been on the field since Nov. 2. Their game vs. Tulsa from last weekend was also postponed. It seems unlikely that either game will be made up.

We are disappointed to have to postpone a second game, however protocols and guidelines are very comprehensive both at the Naval Academy and within the American Athletic Conference,” Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk said in a statement. “There are a number of medical personnel that have reviewed all the related issues and, in the end, an administrative decision has been made that clearly reflects the safety and welfare of all involved with both institutions.”

Meanwhile, Air Force canceled its game set for this Saturday vs. Wyoming outright, citing “an upward trend of COVID-19 cases” at the academy and within the football program.

The Mountain West has determined the game as a “no-contest.”

We are disappointed to lose a second consecutive game, but the health and safety of our cadets, staff and community is our No. 1 priority at the Academy,” Air Force Director of Athletics Nathan Pine said in a statement. “We have seen continued increase in our COVID numbers within the football program and have again eclipsed our threshold for safe competition. We will pause football practices for now and work with our sports medicine staff to determine when it will be safe to restart again.”

Air Force is 1-2 on the season, their only win coming against Navy. The Mids are 3-4 overall and 3-2 in AAC play.

Navy has just one more game left on its schedule before the Army-Navy game on Dec. 12. On Nov. 21, the Mids are scheduled to travel to USF.

Air Force is set to host New Mexico on Friday, Nov. 20. Their game vs. Army remains in limbo.
