Alabama announced Wednesday that head coach Nick Saban tested positive for the coronavirus again and is experiencing symptoms this time.
“This morning we received notification that Coach Saban tested positive for COVID-19,” a statement from team physician Dr. Jimmy Robinson and Alabama athletic director Jeff Allen said. “He has very mild symptoms, so this test will not be categorized as a potential false positive. He will follow all appropriate guidelines and isolate at home.”
Saban will be unavailable for Saturday’s Iron Bowl showdown against Auburn.
In mid-October, Saban tested positive for the virus and immediately went into isolation. However, he had three consecutive days of negative tests and was cleared to coach in time for Alabama’s 41-24 win over Georgia on Oct. 17. It was determined that the initial positive was inaccurate.
Saban later told reporters after the ordeal that he considered himself lucky and the experience “should be a lesson that I can share.”
“Well, once they tell you you’re positive, there’s nothing you can do about it,” Saban said last month. “I was fortunate it was a false positive. So I would encourage everybody out there to do everything they can to practice social distancing and wear a mask and manage their personal space so they don’t have to ever hear the fact that you have this.”
Alabama is 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings that were released Tuesday night.
