We will live our lives again soon - Lowell Sun

Finally, some good news for all Americans. Indeed, for the entire world.

We are getting closer and closer to a workable vaccine for the dreaded coronavirus and with that the resumption of our pre-plague lives is almost within reach.

This week, it was reported that pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca was set to study trial vaccine data on their vaccine (AZD1222) and determine its efficacy and feasibility. About 23,000 patients are being treated with the product thus far.

“Results from late-stage trials are anticipated later this year, depending on the rate of infection within the communities where the clinical trials are being conducted,” Chief Executive Pascal Soriot said in a statement.

The data will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and submitted to government authorities widely. For the United States, FDA approval would be needed

If all goes well, a coronavirus shot could be distributed widely by the end of the year. “We would hope that large-scale vaccinations would be possible starting in January next year — possibly even December,” Soriot told Bloomberg News.

The first batch of vaccines to arrive in the United States will most-likely go to health care workers, as Dr. Jose Romeroa, head of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, told NPR. “It’s not just the doctors and nurses that are interacting with patients, but also the support personnel that help. It could include those persons that are delivering food, or maintenance people that could come in contact with them.”

Regardless of how vaccines are distributed we can all be thankful that pharmaceutical companies are efforting the creation of a vaccine with historic velocity.

Johnson & Johnson has announced that it will also start clinical trials on a Covid-19 vaccine in South Africa.

Even a small American company called Novavax which was struggling to stay afloat just last year has joined the race for a vaccine and is progressing with a unique technology that has shown encouraging results in some early trials. With funding from Operation Warp Speed, American ingenuity will eventually put an end to this nightmare, and the cooperation between the public and private sectors on this advancement should be celebrated as a model for decades to come.

As we enter this new phase of the pandemic, it is important that we manage our expectations about what the future will look like. It is unlikely that we will ever reach a point where the disease is eradicated entirely. But the incidence and severity of the illness can be dramatically reduced to the point where children will be able to go to school, businesses can fully reopen, and we can see our loved ones on holidays again.

It has been too long that American life has not resembled anything that could be considered normal. For too long we have been bearing the effects of this disastrous pandemic, and have sacrificed much to control this scourge’s devastation on our population. The extraordinary measures that have been taken to bring us closer to the light at the end of the tunnel represent a victory for us all.
