Newly reported Covid-19 cases in the U.S. fell slightly from a day earlier, as Florida health officials said they detected a case of a new, fast-spreading variant of the virus that was first identified in the U.K.
That made Florida the third state in the U.S. to report such a case. The Florida Department of Health said the case had been found in a man in his 20s in Martin County, just north of Palm Beach. The department said the man had no history of travel. It offered no information about his condition.
The U.S. reported more than 227,000 new cases of infection for Thursday, down from more than 229,000 a day earlier, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
By nearly every measure, December was the worst month on record since the pandemic took hold in the U.S. New Covid-19 cases stayed above 100,000 a day throughout the month, and more often than not were closer to 200,000, according to an analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University by The Wall Street Journal. Of the country’s 19.97 million infections reported since the start of the pandemic, more than 6.1 million new cases were recorded in December—far more than in any other month.
On Dec. 18, the U.S. recorded nearly 250,000 cases of infection, a daily record.
Deaths for Thursday in the U.S. fell to 3,419 from 3,750 a day earlier, according to Johns Hopkins.
The U.S. has reported more than 345,000 deaths from Covid-19 since the onset of the pandemic.
According to the Covid Tracking Project’s report for Thursday, there are more than 125,000 people in the U.S. who are hospitalized for Covid-19—a record level. That included more than 23,000 people who were being treated in intensive care units across the country.
World-wide, more than 83 million people have tested positive for Covid-19 and more than 1.8 million people have died, according to Johns Hopkins.
