Brandon Crawford has been a thorn in the side of the Colorado Rockies for as long as he’s been in the league. This afternoon was no different as Crawford his a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. This came after Chi Chi González gave a solid outing, lasting five innings and allowing just one run while scattering four hits. Ryan McMahon did his part in giving the lead but, in the end, walks by the bullpen followed by the blast by Crawford made the difference in this one.
Ryan McMahon stays hot
Ryan McMahon had another good day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning. McMahon drove a ball over the fence with two outs to plate González, who had reached earlier in the inning on a single. Who says pitchers shouldn’t hit? There has been quite a bit of speculation about the balls not having as much pop in them this year, but McMahon doesn’t seem to be having any issues whatsoever.
Bases on balls
For the second straight game, the Rockies pitching staff issued far too many walks. The staff combined to walk eight San Francisco Giants over the course of the game, matching the seven issued in the game yesterday. Of the seven walks in this game for the Giants, two came around to score. As always, issuing free passes is a recipe for disaster, particularly when facing a team that is struggling to find their groove at the plate.
Brandon Crawford continues Rockies killing ways
It doesn’t matter what kind of season Brandon Crawford is having or how he is hitting that day, when he comes up with the game on the line, Crawford always seems to punish the Rockies. That was no different today as Crawford followed two walks in the bottom of the sixth from lefty Ben Bowden with a home run to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. Crawford entered the at-bat hitless on the year against left-handed pitchers and pick a heck of a time to register his first of the young season.
Up next
The Rockies will look to salvage one game in the series in another afternoon game with a 2:05pm MDT start time on Sunday. Germán Márquez will take the ball for the Rockies and will be facing Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafani. Márquez is coming off a strong first two outings and will look to put it all together against this pesky Giants lineup. DeSclafani will be making his second start of the season and will look to keep the Rockies’ bats quiet while building on his 1.80 ERA.
