The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Jesse Winker - He was 2 for 4 and hit his fourth dinger of the year.

Honorable mention - Nick Castellanos was 2 for 4 with a double, Nick Senzel walked three times, and Carson Fulmer pitched two shutout innings with two strikeouts.

Key Plays

  • Tommy Edman started off the bottom of the first by lacing a single to right field and Dylan Carlson hit against the shift for another single. In a regular defensive infield formation, the ball would have been a double play. Immediately after, Goldschmidt hit a fielder’s choice to short but the run scored. Arenado then hit into a double play. WLB’s lead, 1-0.
  • Castillo got two quick outs and then Tyler O’Neill crush a pitch to right field. WLB’s lead, 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Tyler O’Neill hit his second dinger of the game. There was then a single, a sac bunt, and Dylan Carlson hit another single to knock in another run. WLB’s lead, 4-0.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Reds finally did something. Jesse Winker hit his 4th dinger of the year. Castellanos then singled and it looked like things were brewing. Well, Joey Votto grounded into a double play and Suarez struck out. WLB’s lead, 4-1.
  • Tyler Naquin came in to pinch hit in the top of the eighth and singled in Kyle Farmer. WLB’s lead, 4-2.
  • Cardinals score again in the bottom of the 8th. WLB’s lead, 5-2.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Reds showed a little life. Winker struck out looking on a borderline pitch on a 3-2 count. Castellanos then socked a ground rule double down the right field line. Votto walked on four pitches, Suarez lined out deep to the left centerfield gap (there was almost a collision), and Nick Senzel walked to load the bases. Tucker Barnhart had a 3-1 count and weakly grounded out to first. WLB’s win, 5-2.

Other Notes

  • Jonathan India was hit in the freaking earhole by Jack Flaherty in the sixth inning. I don’t think he meant to do it but he plays for the worst organization in baseball so I assume he’s a dick. India seemed to be ok but was eventually removed from the game. Both teams were warned about any future shenanigans and David Bell went off. He really doesn’t like it when his players are hit and then there are potential repercussions for his team. This has been a thing ever since he was hired. He got tossed. I guess it was nice to see someone give a damn. I guess.
  • Castillo gave up four runs in five innings. That’s not good. Hopefully, he turns it around soon. He wasn’t exactly fooling anyone either by striking out only three though he walked only one.
  • I napped through almost all this game so there’s a positive if you’re looking for one.
  • They’ve lost seven games in a row.
