- Haas F1 rookie Nikita Mazepin is hoping to complete his first Formula 1 competitive lap this weekend at Imola.
- Mazepin, who is called "Maze-Spin" by some on social media, spun out again in practice on Friday.
- The F1 Emilia Romagna GP is Sunday (8:55 a.m., ET, ESPN)
Haas F1 Team rookie Nikita Mazepin lived up to his not-so-flattering nickname during the first Formula 1 practice session at Imola, Italy, on Friday.
Mazepin, who spun out on the first lap in Bahrain three weeks ago, is out to complete his first competitive Formula 1 lap this weekend at the F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. The weekend didn't get off to a great start, as Mazepin spun out just five minutes into the first practice session. He followed that up with another spin near the end of the session.

“I think we had a positive day—I really learned a lot about the car,' said Mazepin, who has been saddled with the nickname "Maze-Spin" on social media. "I think I made another very good step forward with the team in terms of understanding what car I want to drive. I had a good lap time in FP1, it was a good quali simulation, I was happy with it.
"I then made a mistake which there was no coming back from, but overall, it was a positive FP1 and then FP2. I’m not leaving anything on the table out there. I wouldn’t want to go to sleep thinking I’ve left some time out there. There's a balance of course, which I haven’t mastered yet, but we have time."
Haas F1 team principal Guenther Steiner continues to be patient with his team's 22-year-old rookie, whose father is the team's major sponsor. That patience was tested with the opening-lap spin in Bahrin.
"For a first race weekend with two rookie drivers, it wasn’t bad," Steiner said on Friday at Imola. "Actually, we are learning and that is what I am always saying, this year is here to learn. And obviously learning comes with pain. The pain is normally a damaged car. At some stage, we need to stop to do that. At the moment we just try to go through it and teach them as much as possible so we get better and hopefully in the future have got a better car."

Steiner was pained again in practice at Imola on Friday.
"Nikita on his last lap, he made good improvements time-wise, learning," Steiner said. "And then, on the last corner, he got into the gravel and spun-out. I think the car is not damaged too badly.
"These things happen and obviously in the moment he’s the beat-up boy, you know? Everybody beats up on him. That makes it tougher. In the end you come out on the better side, but you just need to keep your head up, focus on your next race and keep on going. That’s what he did and he was here today, yesterday he was in a good place and today he’s in a good place at the debrief, even if he spun out because he sees he’s improving and he’s learning.
"So, that’s what he has to do. That’s the only thing he can do in this situation – just keep on going, knowing that things went wrong but that he can do better."
Steiner added that he's OK with the learning curve being extended, to a point.
"How much do they worry me? At some stage they need to be reduced but he’s trying very hard and I guess he’s trying sometimes a little bit too hard, but he needs to find that limit but it’s for him to find, not us." Steiner said. "We can help him doing that but it’s one of those things, as I’ve said before, learning is painful, you know? It comes with pain. At some stage that will hopefully stop and they will be in a good place."
