CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – For the second time this season, Duke senior captain Joe Robertson was the overtime hero, scoring the winning goal with 32 seconds left to lift the third-ranked Blue Devils to a thrilling 13-12 overtime win at No. 4 Virginia in ACC men's lacrosse action at Klöckner Stadium.

Joe Robertson finished the night with two goals and three assists for five points to help the Blue Devils improve to 11-1 on the year and 3-1 against ACC foes. Virginia falls to 9-3 overall and 2-3 in league action.

Joe Robertson used a screen from Michael Sowers behind the cage and used that small window of opportunity to get around goal line extended and fire a low to low shot past Virginia goaltender Alex Rode for the winner.

Duke trailed 11-9 late in the third period before pulling within one on a goal from Sowers heading into the final frame. The attackman finished the night with three goals. Overall Duke's attack line of
Sowers, Joe Robertson and Brennan O'Neill registered eight of the 13 goals and 13 of the team's 19 points.

After the Cavaliers regained the two-goal advantage, 12-10, 36 seconds into the quarter the Blue Devil defense took over, keeping Virginia off the scoreboard for the final 14:24. Duke goaltender Mike Adler made three saves in the fourth quarter and one in overtime, finishing the night with 16.

While Duke's defense locked down the Cavaliers, the Blue Devils scored twice in the final 10 minutes to be able to force overtime. O'Neill beat the clock for his third goal of the game with 9:55 left. The Blue Devils missed opportunities over the ensuing minutes, including a couple in transition, but it was the next man up for Duke as junior Garrett Leadmon fought his way to the crease and beat Rode to tie the game up with 1:45 left and set up the wild overtime finish.  It was Leadmon's second goal of the season.

The first 60 minutes were a back and forth affair that featured six ties and two lead changes. The Blue Devils got on the board first with the feel-good goal of the year as graduate student Phil Robertson scored on a pass from his younger brother Joe in their hometown of Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers capitalized off of a couple Blue Devil miscues on the next few possessions and jumped ahead 3-1 at the midway point of the first quarter before Duke went on a 5-0 run over the next 9:08 for a 6-3 lead at the 12:08 mark of the second stanza.

Five different Blue Devils scored in the spurt, while Joe Robertson had a goal and two assists in the run. A pair of freshmen in Aidan Danenza and O'Neill also found their way on the scoreboard, with O'Neill contributing a goal and an assist.

Virginia scored two of the final three goals of the half as Duke headed into the break with a one-goal lead, 7-6.

The second half was much of the same. The Cavaliers evened the score at 12:54 of the third period on a Dox Aitken marker following consecutive saves from Rode on a Duke extra man opportunity. Aitken finished the night with three goals to lead Virginia.

The rivals traded goals over the next three minutes, which included a goal from O'Neill after Duke defenseman JT Giles-Harris threw a pass the length of the field on a rope to a wide open O'Neill for the easy score. The assist was the first in Giles-Harris' career.

Virginia responded with three unanswered to go back ahead 11-9 at the 3:18 of the third stanza. Faceoff specialist Petey LaSalla started the run with a goal off the draw, while Charlie Bertrand and Aitken added one apiece to tie the Cavaliers' largest lead and set up the heart-stopping finish. Bertrand also registered three goals in the setback.

Rode finished with 16 saves for the night for the Cavaliers. Duke held the narrow advantage in shots 50-49. Virginia dominated at the X, winning 18-of-27 draws.

Duke returns home for the final time this regular season, hosting Notre Dame April 22 at 7 p.m., on ACC Network.
