Tampa Bay may have awakened to a sunny Sunday morning, but meteorologists warn that more rain is on the horizon and have issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of central Florida until 4 p.m.
After an active day of thunderstorms Saturday, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center cautioned that even more severe thunderstorms are possible again today across west-central and southwest Florida. The storms are expected to bring damaging wind gusts, ping-pong ball-sized hail, flooding rain, and possible tornados and waterspouts.
The severe thunderstorm watch, deemed a level 2 out of 5, extends across the Tampa Bay region, including Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota, Manatee and Citrus counties.
“The atmosphere is in recovery mode from yesterday ... but poised to rapidly destabilize during the morning hours and early this afternoon,” said Eric Oglesby, a hydrologist and meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin.
“If this continues to play out, I would expect a band of strong showers and storms to approach the Nature Coast (Pasco County north) an hour or two after sunrise, moving southeast to toward the Tampa area around noon and to the southwest Florida by mid-afternoon,” Oglesby said.
Widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain bands will move southeast through west central and southwest Florida today, likely causing flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas including the roadways of south Tampa, meteorologists said.
Most of central Florida can anticipate at least one to two inches of rain by Sunday evening, the National Weather Service said.
Wind speeds of 20 to 25 knots will create hazardous boating conditions today, and a small craft advisory is in effect, the National Weather Service said. Onshore, south to southwest winds are likely to reach 40 to 50 mph, with isolated gusts as strong as 75 mph.
The severe weather is causing some closures and delayed openings at COVID-19 vaccination sites in Hillsborough County. Florida’s vaccination criteria expanded Monday to include all residents age 18 or older, as well as 16- and 17-year olds who want to receive the two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
Vaccination sites at the Tampa Greyhound Track, the Larry Sanders Sports Complex in Tampa, and the Oakland Community Center in Haines City won’t open until at noon Sunday at the earliest, a notice from the county said. Three mobile vaccination sites in Tampa will be closed Sunday due to weather — Hyde Park, Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park downtown.
Sunday’s storm watch comes after a scary evening in several Tampa Bay-area counties. About 20 homes in Bradenton were damaged by severe storms on Saturday, Manatee County Emergency Management said. Five of those homes were heavily damaged by winds strong enough to rip away sections of their roofs. The National Weather Service said damage occurred in a neighborhood near the IMG Academy Golf Club in Bradenton, and at condominiums on nearby 43rd Street West.
A tornado reportedly touched down in a neighborhood near El Conquistador Parkway, where emergency medical personnel responded to a call about one person with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Manatee County Public Safety Department. The National Weather Service has yet to confirm that a tornado touched down in the neighborhood but has confirmed a “straight-line wind event.”
The severe weather will usher in a weak front on Monday that is expected to dry out the rainy weather, said Spectrum Bay News 9 meteorologist Josh Linker. The front may bring a respite from high humidity but not from heat, with highs Monday expected to be in the mid-80s.
Cooler weather is possible later in the week.
