FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - North West Allen County School board members have seen parents debate mask wearing since the start of the pandemic, and they reinstated their mask mandate Monday and are faced with the debate again.
Angela Hess and Chris Newmark both have children in NACS, and Wednesday was the beginning of their mask requirement..
"They felt comfortable coming to school today, they felt safe and happy that masks were reinstated,” Newmark said. “They have a district of over 8 thousand kids and they have to look out for them, and I'm just so thankful for this district.”
Newmark says as COVID-19 cases have been on the rise, she’s been hoping the board would vote to require masks again.
"Kids were complying find and they didn’t see any problems, they said overall it was fine,” Hess said.
Hess says she doesn’t believe there’s a way for COVID-19 cases to go down without a mask requirement.
Hess and Newmark say most importantly they want to keep their kids in the classrooms and for the parents to come together.
“Our kids need us to come back together,” Hess said. “They need the adults to be more united and I think that’s possible.”
"The one thing we have in common is we all love our kids,” Newmark said. “I hope eventually we can all come together.”
There are parents in the district who disagree with the board's requirement saying it is a violation of their children’s rights to force them to wear a mask to school.
However, Allen County Health Commissioner and Governor Eric Holcomb both say masks should be required in schools again as they are effective to stopping the spread of COVID-19.
The NACS board will revisit their mandate October 14th.
