Not again! Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes, Josh Hader combine to no-hit Cleveland Indians, 3-0 - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Wednesday night a raw Twins rookie named Joe Ryan flirted with perfection against the Indians.

Saturday night it was Milwaukee All-Star Corbin Burnes’ turn to dance with history. The Indians have 22 games left in the season and this is becoming a nightly occurrence.

Like Ryan, Burnes lost the perfect game in the seventh when he walked Myles Straw to start the inning. Ryan retired 19 straight before allowing one-out single to Amed Rosario in the seventh.

Unlike Ryan, Burnes and Josh Hader completed the task at hand, no-hitting the Indians in a 3-0 win at Progressive Field. It was the second no-hitter in Brewers history and fourth time the Indians have been no-hit this season, including a seven-inning no-no by the Rays.

The Indians are the first team in history to be no-hit three times by MLB approved no-hitters in one season. Overall, it was the ninth no-hitter this season, the most in history.

Burnes (10-4, 2.25) retired 18 straight Indians, striking out 11, before walking Straw. After the walk, he retired six straight through the eighth before making way for Hader, who retired the side in order to complete the no-hitter, including two strikeouts. Burnes finished with 14 strikeouts, one shy of his season high, with one walk on a season-high 115 pitches.

The first two times the Indians were no-hit this season, the deed was done by left-handers. White Sox lefty Carlos Rodon no-hit the Indians on April 14 at Guaranteed Rate Field. Cincinnati lefty Wade Miley no-hit them again on May 7 at Progressive Field.

On July 7, five Tampa Bay pitchers no-hit the Indians in the second game of a seven-inning doubleheader at Tropicana Field. MLB does not recognize the seven-inning no-hitter.

Zach Plesac (10-5, 4.45) took the loss. He has been the starting and losing pitcher in three of the four no-hitters thrown against the Indians this season.

“I don’t know if that makes sense to me,” said Plesac. “I think it’s insane. I don’t know if it’s me or what’s going on. It’s incredible.”

Burnes entered the game with 196 strikeouts in 144 innings. He had control of six pitches, leaning heavily on his cut fastball that averaged 95.6 mph. He threw 56 cutters, 34 curves, 10 changeups, nine slider, five sinkers and one four-seam fastball. He topped out at 99 mph with a sinker.

“He was really good tonight,” said Straw. “He blew me away with three cutters in the first at-bat. He’s got five plus pitches. He filled up the zone. You just have to come ready for a guy like that and expect his best pitch.”

Regarding the walk to end the perfect game, Straw said “I had a clue how they were attacking me. He just missed a little bit off the plate. He was just really good tonight, There’s nothing much else to say. The guy dominated. I’m sure he’s going to get some Cy Young votes.”

The closest the Indians came to a hit was Owen Miller’s liner to the gap in right center field with two out in the eighth. Center fielder Lorenzo Cain made a sliding catch to end the inning.

Until Saturday night, the Brewers had just one no-hitter in their history. Juan Nieves on April 15, 1987 no-hit the Orioles in a 7-0 win.

It was the 14th recognized no-hitter thrown against the Indians in franchise history. Indians pitchers have thrown 14 no-hitters, but none since Lenny Barker’s perfect game on May 15, 1981.

“No. 1, he had an outstanding cutter,” said acting manager DeMarlo Hale. “In the middle innings he mixed in his breaking ball, sinker and two seamer. He had big velo with movement.”

The Brewers did all their scoring early against Plesac with the help from some poor defense by Indians outfielders.

Plesac opened the game by walking Kolten Wong. Christian Yelich lined a double over Straw’s head in deep center to score Wong. Straw had trouble fielding the rebound off the wall and Yelich went to third on the error.

Omar Narvaez hit a sacrifice fly to right field and just like that Milwaukee had a 2-0 lead four batters into the game.

Milwaukee made it 3-0 in the second. Daniel Vogelbach singled down the right field line, but Bradley Zimmer bobbled the grounder as Vogelbach continued to second on the error. It was the fifth error the Indians have made in the first two games of this series.

Rowdy Tellez delivered Vogelbach with a double to center to make it 3-0.

Plesac allowed three runs, two earned, in six innings. He struck out three, walked two and allowed four hits in his 22nd start of the season.

The Brewers are rolling. Not only have they won 10 of their last 13, but they entered with a 12-game lead in the NL Central.

On Friday night they used four homers to pound the Indians, 10-3. Saturday they no-hit the Indians. They are going to be a handful for whoever has to face them in the postseason.

The Indians have lost seven of their last nine games.

Next: RHP Aaron Civale (10-3, 3.25) vs. Milwaukee LHP Eric Lauer (5-5, 3.18) at 1:10 p.m. Bally Sports Great Lakes, WTAM, WMMS and the Indians radio network will carry the game.
