Tom Brady and Tampa Bay Bucs officials both expect that they will be reworking the future Hall of Fame quarterback's contract yet again after this season, with such negotiations essentially built into the offseason at this point, sources said.
Brady has made it clear that he intends to play beyond this season, and team and league sources indicated that all parties are prepared to restructure and extend his deal again in 2022, should he not retire. There have been zero indications from Brady to any coaches, teammates, associates or anyone in his inner circle that he is even considering shutting it down next year, and barring injury there is every expectation that he will be back next year and thinking about playing even beyond his age-45 season. Brady continues to produce at an amazing level for his age, he thoroughly enjoys the Tampa area and has told others that he believes he has multiple seasons still in him.
The sides redid his contract after Brady's first season with the Bucs, in which he won a Super Bowl, and he currently has a deal through next season. He would have to pay back $15M of signing bonus money if he retired -- again, that would be highly surprising -- and is set to make $24M next season. Having him play into a lame-duck season is something the team and player would like to avoid, and they were able to quickly negotiate a new deal this past offseason.
The salary cap is expected to rise considerably in 2022, and Brady has been open to mostly team-friendly deals his entire career; he is focused on having the best cast possible around him and winning as many Lombardi Trophies as possible. Brady continues to defy the odds, playing at an extremely high level despite his age, and his presence has been a boon to the team's revenue streams and brand.
There is no sign of Brady slowing down, and he spoke again last week, ahead of his return to New England, about his desire to continue playing past his mid-40s. The Bucs are plenty open to facilitating that.
