PASCAGOULA, Mississippi -- Known as the oldest active family graveyard in the country, Krebs Cemetery will play host to the annual Halloween week tour Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The cemetery, which predates the Revolutionary War by at least 25 years, reportedly sits atop an old Indian burial ground off Krebs Lake in Pascagoula.
The historic nature of the cemetery is obvious, but it’s also been repeatedly dubbed as one of the “spookiest” sites in Jackson County, a place where strange sightings have routinely been reported.
People swimming in the lake have reported seeing tombs falling over and bones spilling out. There have been multiple reports of a man, dressed in 1700s period clothing, roaming the cemetery. Others have reported lights, without the source of the lights ever being determined.
The cemetery sits on the grounds on the LaPointe-Krebs House, built in 1757 -- the oldest structure in Mississippi and the oldest confirmed building in the Mississippi Valley, according to the LaPointe-Krebs Museum.
Many of the tombstones and markers within the cemetery are inscribed in French, as the French controlled the area from 1718-1763, according to the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area.
The lake and cemetery adopted the Krebs name when Baron Hugo Ernestus Krebs became a landowner in the 1730s. The British laid claim to the territory in 1763 until 1779, after which the Spanish were in control.
The United States would ultimately gain ownership in 1798 with the finalization of the Louisiana Purchase.
Although the graveyard tour has been a Halloween week tradition for 15 years, All Saints Day was observed at the cemetery as early as 1875.
This year’s tour, while being once again held Halloween week, will serve as a World War II tribute program, complete with a USO show, stories of life on the Mississippi coast during the war years, including civil defense and rationing, and stories of local servicemembers who fought in the European and Pacific Theaters.
There will be jazz music, singing and dancing during the event. There is no admission to attend.
Krebs Cemetery is located at 4602 Fort St. in Pascagoula. For more information, visit the LaPointe Krebs House Facebook page or website at www.lapointekrebs.org.
