Microsoft’s initial update to its new operating system has apparently made the issues worse, according to a report from TechPowerUp.
AMD and Microsoft discovered two faults with Windows 11 on Ryzen processors. Windows 11 may boost L3 cache latency threefold, reducing performance by up to 15% in certain games. The second issue concerns AMD’s preferred core architecture, which transfers threads from the slowest core on a processor to the fastest one.
The L3 cache latency on the Ryzen 7 2700X was measured at around 10nS by TechPowerUp, and Windows 11 lowered it to 17ns.
The patches for both of Ryzen’s problems are on the way before the month is out. Microsoft will likely release a fix for the L3 cache problem next week, according to rumors.
It’s still amazing to me that Windows 11 ships with these issues, especially when Microsoft has limited the number of supported processors for this new OS. Bugs are a given with each new operating system release, but such a significant performance hit on critical CPUs should have been noticed throughout the months of public beta testing.
