The government is set to lead global standardization of interface data between the human brain and computers, hoping that the new standards for the innovative technology will give the country an upper hand in the highly anticipated industry, according to officials, Monday.
The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said its new proposal on the idea has been accepted by the joint technical committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on brain-computer interface (BCI).
The committee held its latest plenary meetings in Hangzhou, China, on Sept. 4 to 7 and approved the Korean agency's proposal.
Connecting human brains directly to computers without any intrusive measures, BCI is a fledgling but promising field that will allow humans to physically control machines including vehicles using only thoughts. By allowing such capability to those with physical disabilities, the technology can be applied to various industries like medicine, health and mobility. Advanced countries have been working on developing the technology.
The proposal came as the global BCI industry has been seeing difficulties due to a lack of compatibility in data generated by BCI-related device manufacturers. By resetting the data to an interchangeable version between businesses and countries through global standardization, the problem can be solved and thus spur the industry as well as reduce costs in developing related devices.
The Korean government, seeing its proposal passed, has also taken leadership in a newly established working group that will be dedicated to data. Other working groups responsible for basics and application have been chaired by India since the global committee's establishment in June 2022.
As of this month, there are 20 member states on the joint committee including Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, India, China and Japan.
KATS President Chin Chong-wook said he hopes Korea will take the critical global leadership in the beginning phase of BCI global standardization at the joint committee and the new working group.
