Raise your glasses! Birmingham can once again get their alcoholic beverages from restaurants and bars to go.
Wait… didn’t we already do this? Yes, we certainly did.
Back in March, when Birmingham was in the early stages of figuring out what social distancing was really all about, the Alabama Beverage Commission (ABC) authorized restaurants and bars to sell alcohol to go. From beer to cocktail kits, it was a big success.
After seeing a decline in COVID-19 cases, to-go alcohol orders went kaputz on September 15. Now, after three months, to go alcohol orders are back on.
In a unanimous 3-0 vote on December 14, the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Board announced it will once again allow restaurants to sell alcohol by pickup and carryout. At least until January 4, 2021 when things are reevaluated.
What’s the new order state?
Under the new order:
- Any business with a Restaurant and Retail Liquor License for on-premises alcohol sales can sell alcohol via curbside pickup or carry out services.
- All servers or employees handling the to-go alcohol must be at least 21 years old.
How much alcohol can be ordered to go?
While the new order may make you want to purchase all the alcohol you can get your hands on so you can avoid going out for a while, there’s a limit to how much you can get to go.
Guidelines state that all to go alcohol sales must be limited to the following volumes per customer:
- 1 375 milliliter bottle of a spirit
- 2 750 milliliter bottles of wine
- 144 ounces of beer
