Former Port Richey Mayor Dale Massad’s attempted murder trial has been delayed again after a coronavirus spike in Pasco County suspended jury trials into next year.
Massad’s trial was initially scheduled for February, then was delayed until March. Pandemic-related court closures pushed his trial to June, but over the summer Florida’s coronavirus figures spiked again, furthering delays.
The trial was rescheduled for early October, according to Pasco County court records, and then for Jan. 11, 2021. On that date, there will instead be another pretrial conference.
Massad is accused of firing at Pasco County Sheriff’s deputies who served him a search warrant last February. He also faces charges for practicing medicine without a license.
“It appears that that’s not a realistic trial date in light of what’s happening with COVID-19,” said Massad’s lawyer Bjorn Brunvand on a Zoom hearing Tuesday afternoon. “We would be ready to go if it was a realistic date but I’m guessing it’s not.”
Massad’s ongoing cases will have a pretrial conference on Jan. 11 at 9 a.m., Sixth Judicial Circuit Judge Mary Handsel said during Tuesday’s Zoom call.
A new jury trial date has not been set.
