It’s going to rain, then it’s going to stop raining, then it’s going to rain some more, the Weather Service said Saturday.
And then it will stop and start again, and all within the next four days.
Sprinkles will continue through Saturday evening, Dry, cloudy weather will move in on Sunday but on Sunday night and Monday morning, more rain — possibly a heavy downpour with gusty winds — is in store.
By Monday night a “drying trend” will move in and then, just as quickly move out, giving way to more rain on Tuesday, forecasters said.
”It’s going to be quite a pattern,” said Weather Service meteorologist Brayden Murdock. “We could have some of our best rainfall amounts in a while.”
In the Sierra, light snow is expected on Sunday and heavy snow on Monday. A winter storm warning is in effect from Monday morning until Tuesday morning, with “strong and possibly damaging winds for most areas” according to the weather service said.
“Significant travel delays and chain controls should be expected into Monday evening,” forecasters added.
The Squaw Valley-Alpine Meadows ski resort said it was expecting about a foot and a half of snow on Monday, with high temperatures just below freezing and lows in the teens, and heavy winds.
Since the current rainfall began Friday, San Francisco and Berkeley received two-tenths of an inch, Pacifica got .35 inches, Mount Tamalpais got .57 inches and Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz mountains got .62 inches.
Even with the current splattering, Bay Area totals remain well below normal. In downtown San Francisco, the seasonal total is 2.76 inches, compared with an average to-date amount of 8.99 inches. Last year by this date, 6.38 inches had fallen.
It was much the same story at Oakland International Airport, where 1.89 inches had fallen as of Saturday, compared with a normal to-date amount of 7.56 inches.
The coming days could bring half an inch to San Francisco and an inch to the North Bay and South Bay mountains, Murdock said — still not enough to bring the annual total into the normal range.
High temperatures throughout the Bay Area will be in the 50s and low 60s, with lows in the 40s and upper 50s.
Moderate air quality was expected for the Bay Area on Sunday, improving to “good” in the early part of the week, the AirNow air quality service said.
High surf advisories remain in effect through Sunday morning all along the Northern California coast, with waves of up to 30 feet expected. Beachgoers were advised to stay away from the water and never turn their backs on the Pacific Ocean.
