MUMBAI: Students enrolling with Mumbai University (MU) in the coming academic session are likely to benefit from the university’s single-window approach for all student services, including enrolment, scorecards, revaluation, transcripts, basically covering their entire life-cycle in the university system. The university, for the first time, has set aside funds for creating this single-window interface, which promises to reduce students’ multiple visits to the campus. This has been a long-pending proposal floated by different heads of the university.
A budget outlay of Rs 811 crore was passed on Monday within two hours, without any elected members in the university’s senate body. Usually, the budget is passed after a two-day session after members raise questions on different student-related issues. After the term of the last senate body ended, elections for the fresh body are yet to be held. The university has projected an annual deficit of Rs 99.45 crore in the budget statement.
Among other new projects announced, the university has also allocated funds for creating a corpus for the appointment of professor and associate professor of practice – a policy approved by the University Grants’ Commission (UGC) for the first time in 2022 – in this year’s budget. Efforts will also be taken to retain teachers post their retirement and to attract eminent personalities for the post in university’s departments offering postgraduate programmes. It has set aside around Rs 2.5 crore. An official from the university said that the university will adopt the UGC policy or the state policy for government colleges and issue the directive soon.
Speaking about the single-window approach, Pradeep Kamthekar, finance and accounts officer, at the university, said that the university wants to eliminate all reasons for students’ visits to the university’s campus, right from mark-sheet errors, to revaluation, to migration certificates to seeking transcripts. “We are hoping to reduce these visits to the university entirely. Students already have a unique registration number, many of the activities have moved online, but we want to make it an end-to-end online solution,” said the official.
