Abreu, Again - Yahoo Sports

kembaliui.blogspot.com

OK, we get it, Jose Abreu. You deserve some more respect.

After the first three-homer game of his career Saturday against the Cubs, Abreu was back at it again on Sunday at Wrigley Field, slugging a solo homer against Yu Darvish in his first at-bat. With that, he became the 43rd player in MLB history to homer in four consecutive at-bats.

The White Sox couldn’t muster any more offense against Darvish or the Cubs’ bullpen, ultimately falling 2-1 to snap their seven-game winning streak, but it was still an incredible series for Abreu. He slugged six homers, tying him for the most over the course of a three-game series dating back to 1920. The others include Hee-seop Choi (2005), Shawn Green (2002), Alex Rodriguez (2002), and Barry Bonds (2001).

With the massive power surge, Abreu now leads the American League with 11 homers and 28 RBI to go along with a .322/.365/.669 batting line. Only Padres phenom Fernando Tatis Jr. outpaces him in homers (12) and RBI (29) in MLB. Abreu’s already-excellent numbers in terms of exit velocity and hard-hit percentage are off the charts at the moment.

After leading the American League with 123 RBI last season, Abreu carried an ADP (average draft position) of 75.4 in Yahoo leagues this year. That was 10th among first-base eligible players. He has produced at a higher level than all names ahead of him so far this season.

Some skepticism about Abreu’s 2019 production was justified, as RBIs are a team-dependent statistic and his plate discipline has been headed in the wrong direction in recent years. However, the 33-year-old has generally been a lock for something in the area of 30 homers and 100 RBI over a full season when healthy. And the outlook for the White Sox lineup looked better this year than it did last year. If you were able to wait in your draft and land a bargain in Abreu, good on you.

Anderson Ailing

You know what this season really needs? More bullpen uncertainty.

That’s the situation with the Rays at this point, as Nick Anderson was forced to the injured list on Sunday due to right forearm inflammation. He had felt some tightness in the area of the past week, though an MRI has ruled out any structural issues.

Anderson hasn’t pitched since Wednesday, so he could return as soon as August 30. That might be a bit on the optimistic side, but Rays manager Kevin Cash said Sunday that all involved are “hopeful that this will be somewhat of a short stint.”

Anderson is notably the ninth different pitcher with the Rays to hit the injured list this season. Coming off a dominant showing after his acquisition from the Marlins last season, the 30-year-old has compiled three saves with 9 1/3 scoreless innings and a 15/1 K/BB ratio over 11 appearances this season.

The Rays are no strangers to getting creative in the late innings, but Diego Castillo is presumably the top option for saves with Anderson sidelined. He surrendered a two-run homer to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on Sunday after entering in the eighth inning, which opened the door for John Curtiss to secure a five-out save.

Other notable players who hit the injured list over the weekend:

Kris Bryant (finger), Salvador Perez (eye), Matt Shoemaker (shoulder), Austin Slater (groin), Josh James (hip), Dylan Moore (wrist), Jay Bruce (quad), Max Stassi (quad, knee), Francisco Cervelli (concussion), Chaz Roe (elbow), Homer Bailey (biceps)

Sunday Saves

Taylor Rogers (6)
Trevor Williams (6) - Yoshihisa Hirano (COVID-19) just joined the Mariners on Friday and could be an option for saves if Williams eventually falters
Brandon Workman (5) - First save with Phillies after taking the loss in his debut on Saturday
Jeremy Jeffress (3)
Emilio Pagan (2) - Pagan is an excellent source for saves with Drew Pomeranz (shoulder) sidelined
Tanner Scott  (1) - First career save
Joel Cisnero (1) - Cisnero is worth watching amid Joe Jimenez’s recent struggles
John Curtiss (1) - Eighth different pitcher to record a save for the Rays this season
Richard Rodriguez (1) - This was just the second save for a Pirates pitcher this season; Rodriguez is the best short-term option in this bullpen, though the Pirates are hopeful Keona Kela (forearm) won’t be out for long. Kyle Crick (shoulder) is also getting closer to returning.

Sunday’s Five-Star Performance

Mookie Betts - 3-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, 2 SB vs. Rockies

The Dodgers slugged seven home runs as part of an 11-3 blowout victory over Colorado.

Betts launched a solo homer in the third inning before tacking on a two-run shot in the eighth with the game already well out of reach. According to Eric Stephen of SB Nation, he became the 19th player with two homers and two steals in the same game dating back to 1901. Jason Heyward (April 6, 2019) was the most recent player to pull off the feat.

Betts is now up to 11 homers on the year (tied for second in MLB) to go along with a .300/.369/.664 batting line through 28 games. He’s a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases while also tallying 24 RBI and 25 runs scored. It’s safe to say he’s living up to his first-round billing in mixed fantasy leagues.
