Houston again facing threat of both Marco and Laura - Houston Chronicle

Hurricane Marco is now expected to hang offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, potentially curving toward Houston and keeping the city on alert (once again) for two weather systems this week.

As it continues its path toward southeast Louisiana, Marco strengthened into a hurricane on Sunday and has sustained winds near 75 mph. It's not expected to strengthen much over the next 24 hours, and then it should gradually weaken, becoming a remnant low by Tuesday night, according to a 4 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. It could reach the Houston area early Wednesday.

The path of Tropical Storm Laura shifted west Sunday morning, indicating it could make landfall in southeast Texas or Louisiana later this week. The path of this storm still has had a high level of uncertainty, but the National Weather Service's Houston/Galveston office said Laura's trajectory should become less volatile after it emerges into the Gulf of Mexico Monday night or Tuesday.

The Coast Guard is watching both storms and urging people to stay off the water.

“We haven't seen two storms in the gulf in about 60 years and they are both expected to make landfall this week, as of right now," Petty Officer 1st Class Amelia Chutchins, of the Coast Guard's District Eight command center, said in a news release. "Our crews are doing everything they can to prepare and are pre-staging response assets to be able respond to emergencies as rapidly and safely as possible once the storms pass.”
