Marc-Andre Fleury has had a weird career. With 466 career regular season wins, he ranks fifth all-time in that category and on top of that, he’s a three-time Stanley Cup champion. And yet even as he approaches his 36th birthday, it feels like he still has something left to prove. His agent, Allan Walsh, put that idea into the spotlight when he released the now deleted tweet with an imagine of Fleury literally being backstabbed by a sword labeled DeBoer, named after the Vegas head coach who has routinely started Robin Lehner over Fleury in the 2020 playoffs.
It’s got to feel like a familiar story to Fleury at this point. Fleury wasn’t the starting goaltender in the Penguins’ championship-winning games in 2016 or 2017. The Penguins had largely moved on from Fleury and even sent the Golden Knights a second round pick just so that they would agree to take his contract off their hands in the expansion draft. Fleury’s 2017-18 campaign was something of a redemption arc with him leading Vegas to the Stanley Cup Final, but he and the Golden Knights ultimately fell short. Now Vegas looks like a legitimate Stanley Cup contender again, but the way things are trending, even if they do win it all, Fleury will be watching the final minutes from the bench.
It’s easy to feel for Fleury to an extent, but it’s equally easy to see why DeBoer keeps starting Lehner. DeBoer’s faith in Lehner was rewarded yet again on Saturday when he bounced back from a shaky start to earn his second shutout in the span of three games.
With a 2.08 GAA and .921 save percentage in nine starts, Lehner has been one of the keys to Vegas’ success and unless something changes, it’s hard to see how Fleury regains his role as the team’s number one goaltender in the 2020 playoffs.
