Massachusetts public health officials reported 109 new coronavirus cases and 20 more deaths on Saturday as the positive test rate reached a new low of 1.1%.
The new deaths bring the state’s COVID-19 toll to 8,690, according to data from the state Department of Public Health. The three-day average number of deaths was 14.
There are now 115,850 confirmed cases of the highly contagious virus in Massachusetts.
The seven-day average positive test rate — a key metric closely watched by state and public health officials — ticked down to 1.1% from 1.2% the day prior, continuing a gradual downward trend over the course of the past couple weeks after a scare in July when it climbed as high as 2.2%.
But the health department warned all of these numbers “may appear lower than usual” because the data comes only from cases reported to DPH from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday due to a “planned upgrade” of the reporting system over the weekend. The state will also skip updating its dashboard on Sunday during the overhaul, and will resume doing so on Monday.
The three-day average number of hospitalizations dropped again to a new low of 336. The number of hospitals using surge capacity remained at four.
There are 315 people currently hospitalized due to the virus, down from 322 the day prior. The state reported 50 patients in intensive care units, down from 66 the day prior. The number of people intubated rose to 20 from 15.
Long-term care facilities reported another 13 deaths, for a total of 5,714. There are 379 centers that have reported at least one COVID-19 case, and 24,555 residents and workers have fallen ill.
Another 8,301 individuals were tested for the virus statewide, for a total of 1.54 million. More than 2 million tests have been administered overall.
The number of coronavirus cases worldwide topped 23 million on Saturday, with more than 5.6 million originating in the United States. The global death toll stood at more than 801,000, including 176,000 American fatalities. Roughly 14.7 million people have recovered, including 1.9 million in the U.S.
