Navy Pier Closing Again In September As It Faces Staggering Losses From Coronavirus - Block Club Chicago

CHICAGO — Navy Pier will close again starting Sept. 8.

The iconic spot will stop all its operations and close the more than 70 small businesses that are housed there, according to a Navy Pier news release. Outdoor spots at the pier, like the north and south docks and Polk Bros Park, will be closed or only opened on a limited basis.

The pier isn’t expected to open again until the spring, according to Navy Pier.

The destination hopes the closure can “limit the financial burden and impact of the ongoing coronavirus” pandemic, according to the news release.

Typically bustling with tourists who eat at the restaurants, shop, take in the lakefront and ride the famed Ferris wheel, Navy Pier has been far quieter this summer.

The pier was closed entirely March 16-June 10 due to the pandemic, and beloved attractions like the Centennial Wheel have not reopened. The Chicago Children’s Museum and Shakespeare Theater have also stayed shut.

Those attractions are a “primary source of revenue,” according to Navy Pier, as are private events, trade shows and banquets, which have been canceled. Tourist visits have dropped dramatically, as well.

“The loss of these earnings has been devastating to the organization’s budget, resulting in a projected deficit of $20 million in 2020,” according to Navy Pier. “Navy Pier’s short-term closure will help limit further losses for the organization, as well as the businesses that are housed at the Pier.”

Navy Pier is providing rent relief to its tenants.

The pier is a nonprofit and does not receive tax dollars.

The pier will remain open through Labor Day with safety precautions in place.
