When Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the Capitol on January 6, they did so in the hopes of overturning the 2020 election and stopping Joe Biden from becoming president. When that didn’t happen and Trump, in fact, was forced to vacate the White House and move down to Mar-a-Lago, you might have expected that this spirited group of violent rioters would have packed it in and decided to move on with their lives, particularly given the fact that more than 250 of them have been arrested and charged for their roles in the failed coup. But, surprise: Crazy never sleeps and, instead, the ex-president‘s most loyal followers have simply come up with a new plan of action.
ABC News reports that U.S. Capitol Police officials have “obtained intelligence that shows a possible plot to breach the Capitol by an identified militia group on Thursday, March 4,” the date that deranged conspiracy theorists believe Trump will return to power. The House, which was scheduled to be in session on Thursday, will no longer be open, with business planned for that day taking place Wednesday night, sources told the outlet. (The Senate is still expected to be in session and begin debate and vote on the $1.9 relief bill on Thursday.)
In an FBI bulletin, officials said that the potential follow-up attack could involve a group called the “Three Percenters,” whose name is “based on the myth that only three percent of American colonists took up arms against the British during the American Revolution,” and whose members “regard the present-day U.S. Government as analogous to the British” during the Revolutionary War. Prosecutors have called the group “extremist” and say the “Three Percenters” term is “representative of a common belief in the notion that a small force with a just cause can overthrow a tyrannical government if armed and prepared.” Which, given the events of January 6, and the five people it left dead, sounds worrisome. Per ABC:
On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security issued a confidential assessment to law enforcement agencies, obtained by ABC News, that warned the threat of domestic violent extremism in 2020 will likely continue in 2021 and “could escalate to include targeting of critical infrastructure.” On Wednesday, Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman told House lawmakers that security around the Capitol complex has been “enhanced” in light of the concerns about threats to lawmakers over the next few days. “We are prepared to respond appropriately,” she said. Pittman also told lawmakers that in the first two months of 2021, officials recorded a 93% increase in threats against Congress members. In testimony last week, she said that the January 6 rioters “want to blow up the Capitol and kill as many members as possible” during Biden’s first formal speech before a joint session of Congress.

Democrats have struck a compromise that is sure to anger many people—chief among them, progressive Democrats. Per Business Insider:
Under the narrower eligibility rules, individuals earning under $75,000 (and couples earning under $150,000) are set to receive full checks, but those making $80,000 and up, and $160,000 as a couple, will no longer qualify. According to analysis from the Institution of Taxation and Economic Policy, approximately 16 million fewer Americans will qualify for a third check under the new plan, compared to the House version of the bill.
