For the second night in a row the high powered LSU offense was shutdown by the excellent Mississippi State pitching staff and the Tigers were shutout 3-0.
Landon Marceaux was charged with his first loss of 2021, despite a hard fought seven inning outing. Marceaux only allowed two hits, but walked three one of which led to an unearned run in the fifth inning.
Marceaux gave up a leadoff walk to Logan Tanner, who then reached second on a sacrifice and then made it to third on a fielding error by Jordan Thompson. Tanner would come around to score on a sac fly.
State would add on runs in both the eighth and ninth inning. Rowdey Jordan drove in Brayland Skinner with a single up the middle in the eighth, and Luke Hancock scored the insurance run thanks to a Josh Hatcher ground out to second.
After being only able to tack on a run Friday night, LSU wouldn’t be able to seriously threaten Mississippi State aside from the first inning. Dylan Crews and Tre Morgan opened the game with back to back base hits, and Crews was able to move to third on a throwing error. But with runners on the corners and no outs, Cade Doughty struck out and Gavin Dugas grounded into a double play.
State’s starting pitcher Will Bednar then retired the next 13 batters he faced and was pulled after five strong innings where he struck out seven. Preston Johnson and Landon Sims carried Mississippi State home, pitching two innings each and only allowing a combined two hits.
LSU had one final opportunity in the eighth inning but squandered it. Crews singled up the middle with one out and would move to second on a wild pitch by Sims. Doughty moved Crews to third with a single to short but, once again, with runners on the corners and two outs a Gavin Dugas ground ball ended LSU’s scoring opportunity. All told, the Tigers left seven runners on base.
LSU looks to avoid the sweep Sunday afternoon. Junior righty AJ Labas (0-0, 3.10 ERA) takes on Eric Cerantola (0-1, 6.97 ERA)
