It appears the dream is dead. Again.
During a media availability on Friday, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman once again popped The Question to Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens: Is Stevens considering the IU job?
No, Stevens responded. And he really wants people to stop asking.
“I said it the other day: no,” Stevens said. “I tried to say it as clearly as I could and make sure that people understand that that place, to me, is special because I don’t want to make it sound like it’s not. But like I said the other day, I’m so grateful to this organization and the people here for all that they have done for us, the way we’ve been supported.”
Tuesday was a busy day for Stevens, who refuted interest in the Indiana head coaching position in multiple interviews prior to that night’s game against the Utah Jazz. In a pregame chat with reporters, Stevens spoke thoughtfully about his home state and the rumors about him potentially coaching at IU.
But Stevens was simply trying to be polite, he says. The Zionsville native wants to stay in the NBA.
“I love this area,” he said Friday. “People have been great to us. My family is so happy and, at the same time, you know, home is home. That’s why I wanted to make sure that everybody understood that that means a lot. But just like I said on Tuesday, I’m not. So, I don’t know if I’ll have to answer that again on Monday, but I hope people understand that, and people can hopefully appreciate that it still means a lot to me. I hope they hire whoever they hire, and I hope they’re there for 20 years and kids feel like I did. But I’m not a kid anymore. I’m a 44-year-old Masshole. I swerve around others when I’m driving, I eat Dunkin Donuts and I root for the Patriots. I’ve, unfortunately, been skewed in a lot of ways, I guess.”
Ah! Well. Nevertheless.
