As New Jersey turns the corner toward spring and the COVID-19 vaccine becomes more widely available, new cases of the coronavirus remain on the rise in many parts of the state.
The state added 24.4 new cases of COVID-19 per 10,000 during the week of March 11-17. That’s a 12% increase over the week prior. On a county level, 18 of New Jersey’s 21 counties saw more new cases this week than last.

The biggest jump came in Salem County, which went from 10.3 new cases per 10,000 residents to 16.6, a 61.5% jump. No other county saw an uptick of more than 50%. Morris County was next with a 32.8% increase, and five others were over 20%.

The three counties where cases declined all saw marginal drops. Cases in Gloucester County, home of the biggest drop, went down by just 3.3%.
In terms of total per capita cases, Monmouth County led the state, adding 34.4 new cases per 10,000 residents. Also in the top five were Morris County (31.4 new cases per 10,000 residents), Ocean County (28.2), Passaic County (27.7), and Essex County (26.8).
The lowest number of new cases came in Cape May County. While the county was up 18.5% from last week, it added just 10.2 new cases per 10,000 residents. No other county was under 14.
