Jose Urquidy continued his run of Spring mediocrity today, allowing two earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched, allowing three hits with three strikeouts. For the Spring he has pitched eight innings, allowing six runs with six strikeouts.
Urquidy’s trouble today came in the second inning when he allowed both runs on two singles and a double by Jorge Alfaro. Urquidy was replaced in the fourth by our old friend, PED-suspended, one-time top prospect Frances Martes, who recorded the last out in his only appearance this Spring.
Brandon Bielak, a possible rotation depth piece later in the season, also failed to impress. In two innings he allowed two runs on three hits in the seventh inning, and escaped further damage with a pickoff at first for the third out. Bielak’s ERA this Spring stands at 7.71.
On the bright side, an up-and-coming prospect, written about HERE at the Crawfish Boxes, Hunter Brown, made his Major League debut with a scoreless fifth inning.
In the ninth inning, the Marlins added their last two runs against non-roster invitee Blair Henley.
The front-line starting Astros squad only managed one run, when, after three walks with one out in the third, they could only manage a Carlos Correa sac fly.
The Astros did mount a threat in the bottom of the ninth scoring two runs on three doubles by Abraham Toro, Garrett Stubbs, and Freudis Nova respectively. Jeremy Pena added two more RBI with a single that scored Nova and Ronnie Dawson, who walked ahead of Pena. For Pena, a top Astros prospect, it was his first hit of the Spring.
The rally fell short when Bryan De La Cruz grounded out to end the game.
Tomorrow the Astros play the Mets at 12:10 CDT.
