LOS ANGELES — It would be the slightest crack in LeBron James’ warming MVP campaign if voters were watching the fourth quarter of a largely forgettable game on Tuesday night: The Lakers took their first double-digit lead of the night early, when the 36-year-old was sitting on the sideline.

It’s certainly not an intuitive concept for a Lakers roster that has been whittled by injury and COVID-19 protocols: How are they winning without stretching James to the limit?

The answer: The bench has been punching well above its weight.

That was reinforced in the second half of a 137-121 shootout with Minnesota at Staples Center, the Lakers’ third straight win out of the All-Star break that has proven to be a launching pad for the second half of their season. Montrezl Harrell tied a team-best mark of 25 points, including a screaming finish on a fourth-quarter dunk that helped put another game to bed for the Lakers without Anthony Davis, Marc Gasol or Alex Caruso.

Against the last-place Timberwolves (9-31), the Lakers’ win could best be considered taking care of business: They finished the season 3-0 against slumping Minnesota. It was the second-highest scoring performance by the home team this season.

The Lakers’ bench depth is far from a secret: Entering Tuesday’s game, the team was averaging 40.3 points off the bench, fourth in the NBA. And any unit with Harrell, the league’s reigning Sixth Man of the Year, is bound to hit hard on offense.

“Automatically, when we got him, I knew it could be something that we could exploit,” James said of Harrell. “So I think as of late, we know where we are on the floor, we know the sets that we’re in and he’s doing a hell of a job of being able to set screens for me, get me downhill and then I’m just trying to put it on time, on target before he gets to his game.”

But while Harrell continued a recent torrent that has seen him shooting well (30 for 41) out of the All-Star break, he’s not been alone: Kyle Kuzma had his fifth consecutive double-digit scoring game (16 points), sprinting the floor with the hustle of a wideout, while Talen Horton-Tucker had another strong game walking the tightrope of backup point guard (16 points, seven rebounds, four assists in 26 minutes).

As he is wont to do, James still piled up his statistics: He finished with his fifth triple-double of the season (the 99th of his career), with 25 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds – throwing his share of outlets. As good as he was, there was a telling number on the box score: During James’ 31 minutes, the Lakers were dead even with the visitors.

Not so comparing the bench units: The Laker reserves piled up 68 points to 32 from their Minnesota counterparts. It helped that the Lakers enjoyed their second straight strong shooting night from behind the arc, hitting 13 for 26 from the perimeter, resulting in a season-high 37 assists.

James helped close at the finish with a pick-and-roll attack with Harrell that gave the Lakers’ big man three consecutive dunks.

“We have a mindset with our system that if we run a play and it works, we keep running it,” Coach Frank Vogel said. “Bron just put on a masterpiece in finding three, four, maybe even five options out of that action.”

The offensive explosion wiped out a scrappy offensive night from the Timberwolves’ stars: Karl-Anthony Towns and rookie Anthony Edwards each scored 29 points.

A sleepy start, especially on defense, was evidence of the Lakers’ leg-dragging after playing Monday night in San Francisco. After beating up on Golden State with an evening of attentive defensive possessions, the Lakers relaxed to allow Towns, Edwards and Ricky Rubio (19 points, 12 assists) into the lane mostly when they wished.

The positive part for the Lakers was the layup line was a two-way street. The 26th-ranked defense in the NBA was as soft as advertised, and while James got off to a relatively slow start, big men like Markieff Morris and Harrell did not: By halftime, the Lakers had a 71-70 lead with 36 points in the paint.

James found a jolt of energy in the third quarter with a standout shift chock full of highlights: a hanging up-and-under layup; a last-second block of a Jake Layman shot; a 3-pointer over Towns seconds after signaling he was ready for a substitution. But the Lakers were still scrapping by the end of it, with neither team leading by more than single digits to that point.

The Lakers improved to 10-7 without Davis in the lineup this season as he missed his 12th consecutive game with the right calf injury that is likely to sideline him through the end of this month. The wins gained and lessons learned should still retain value when the Lakers get their rotation players back.

“You figure it out, your players’ strengths and weaknesses, what combinations you like and don’t like and you settle in,” Vogel said. “Hopefully when we’re whole, those guys will still be in that type of rhythm.”
