Risk dials on the rise again in the Tri-Cities - KSNB Local 4

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Just months ago, there were strict restrictions and people couldn’t hardly go anywhere without a mask. According to health officials we could possibly be headed down that road again with another surge on the horizon.

“They’ve had huge surges in southern Missouri caused by the Delta variant and are having issues in their hospitals and having to transfer patients and struggling with resources like ventilators, so I do fear that and I think we need to be aware that it can happen here as well,” said South Heartland District Health Department (SHDHD) Director Michele Bever.

In the South Heartland District, the risk dial is back in the yellow after confirming nine new cases last week and four additional cases this week with two of them being Delta cases. In Grand Island, the Central District is also back in the yellow, as Covid-cases continue to double throughout the area.

“If you look at how quickly cases are increasing, it does not bode well for us in the future,” Central District Health Department Director Teresa Anderson told Local4 News. “We don’t know exactly what’s coming down the pipe but we do think we are going to see a lot more cases very quickly and we’re very quickly going to be into that orange zone and then into the red zone again.”

According to the CDC, transmission levels need to be at 51 per 100,000 to be at the substantial spread zone. Unfortunately we’re already there and Anderson said we’re running out of time to slow this latest surge down.

“We all want this to be over, we really want it end but it won’t end unless we take action on our own,” Anderson said. “We each have to do the things that we need to do to protect our families, to protect our little ones, especially the elderly. We need to get vaccinated, we need to start thinking about wearing masks again, just start thinking about it.”

Both health directors urge everyone to get vaccinated to control the spread of the virus. They also advise people to wear masks if they’re not vaccinated and for vaccinated people to wear masks around large groups to keep everybody safe.
