Pacific Gas and Electric Co. warned that it may have to implement rolling blackouts again between 5 and 10 p.m. on Saturday but a final decision has not yet been made by state energy grid managers.
PG&E said the outages would last for one to two hours and it expected a final decision later in the day from managers at the California Independent System Operator, which oversees most of the state's grid.
Rolling outages affected about 220,000 California homes and businesses on Friday night, as the grid staggered under the energy demands, particularly air conditioning, brought on by the heat wave. Power went off for many affected customers at 6:35 p.m. on Friday, and everyone was restored by about 10:15pm
But the California Independent System Operator, which oversees most of the state’s grid and makes the decision about whether outages are necessary, does not currently intend to call for more blackouts, according to spokeswoman Anne Gonzales.
Persistent heat, including high overnight temperatures, are placing high demand on the grid, Gonzales said in an email. Cloud cover in the desert has also made solar power more volatile, she said.
But two power plants that had been out of service are now back online and managers expect to be able to cover an operating reserve shortage.
"We are not planning to call for rotating power outages at this time, but system conditions are always subject to change," she said in the email.
PG&E said its emergency operations team will continue to monitor the situation into next week and encouraged customers to save as much energy as possible through Wednesday.
