Claudette isn’t done just yet.

The tropical depression, which made landfall in Louisiana on Saturday as a tropical storm and dropped flooding rain and tornadoes on Alabama, could become a tropical storm again, but this time over the western Atlantic Ocean.

Claudette, the third named storm of 2021, was still inland on Sunday. The depression was centered about 80 miles west of Columbia, S.C., as of 4 p.m. CDT Sunday and was moving east-northeast at 17 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Claudette was forecast to strengthen again starting tonight.

The depression had top winds of 30 mph.

Claudette is expected to move back out over water on Monday and restrengthen into a tropical storm.

It will be moving away from the United States at that point, but it will pass near or just south of Nova Scotia on Tuesday, the hurricane center said.

Tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect for the coasts of the Carolinas as of Sunday.

A tropical storm warning is in effect from Little River Inlet to Duck, N.C., as well as Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. A tropical storm watch is in effect from the South Santee River in South Carolina to Little River Inlet.

Claudette is expected to move over the coast of North Carolina and into the western Atlantic in Monday.

Claudette will need sustained winds of 39 mph to become a tropical storm again. The hurricane center said that could happen late tonight or early Monday. It could strengthen more through early Tuesday, forecasters said.

Tropical storm conditions will be possible in the Carolinas late tonight or early Monday, the hurricane center said.

Claudette’s top winds so far were 45 mph as it was moving onshore from the Gulf on Saturday.

The storm could bring another 2 to 4 inches of rain from the Florida Panhandle through southern Georgia and into the Carolinas through Monday morning.

Claudette dropped 5 to 10 inches of rain along the Gulf Coast and into Alabama.

Claudette is the third named storm so far this season. The other two storms, Ana and Bill, were short-lived tropical storms in the Atlantic.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
