OMAHA, Neb. – Ivan Melendez hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to give No. 2 Texas Baseball an 8-5 win over Mississippi State in the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park on Friday.
With the Longhorns' win, Texas and Mississippi State will play again on Saturday at 6 p.m. for a trip the College World Series finals.
For the second straight night, the Longhorns battled the weather and had to wait out a more than two-hour delay in the ninth inning before securing the win. Melendez hit his go-ahead homer minutes before the delay began. He finished the night 2-for-5 with four RBI and one run scored.
Ty Madden put together a strong outing on short rest, pitching six innings and allowing just two runs on four hits. He struck out eight batters to up his season total to 137 strikeouts, the most by a Texas pitcher since Kirk Dressendorfer in 1990.
Aaron Nixon closed out the final 1 2/3 innings pitched and picked up the win in relief.
Mike Antico went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while Zach Zubia and Trey Faltine each had a hit and a run driven in.
Zubia gave Texas an early 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the first inning. The home run was Zubia's 11th of the season and the 30th of his career, tied for the eighth-most career homers in Texas history.
Mississippi State came right back to take a 2-1 lead on three singles in the bottom of the first. Madden was able to get out of the jam with a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
The Longhorns knotted the game back up, 2-2, in the top of the second after Mitchell Daly and Douglas Hodo III both singled and pulled off the double steal. A sacrifice fly by Faltine drove in the tying run.
Texas retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning, getting Hodo and Silas Ardoin on base with free passes. Antico followed with an RBI single into center to make the score 3-2.
The Longhorns tacked on two more runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-2. The inning started with Faltine reaching on a double that was lost in the lights. Antico drove in Faltine with his second RBI single of the night. With two outs, Melendez delivered another RBI single to extend the Horns lead.
Tanner Witt pitched a scoreless seventh inning, working around an error to keep the Bulldogs off the board. The eighth inning was a different story, as Mississippi State scored three runs off of the combo of Witt and Nixon to tie the game up 5-5.
Melendez came right back and blasted Texas back into the lead with a three-run bomb in the top of the ninth inning.
