Fire mitigation work in the Durango Wildland Urban Interface begins Monday - The Durango Herald

kembaliui.blogspot.com

Fire mitigation work on city-owned lands in the Durango Wildland Urban Interface will begin Monday, June7, along Crestview Ditch at Overend Mountain Park.

The Wildland Urban Interface contains areas where structures and other improvements are built close to, or within, natural terrain and flammable vegetation. The work will manually thin hazardous fuels on about 38 acres in Overend Mountain Park, Dalla Mountain Park and Horse Gulch.

The efforts are being planned by Fire Adapted Durango, a partnership between the city of Durango Parks and Recreation Department and numerous fire experts.

The thinning will be done by contracted sawyer crews and adheres to Colorado State Forest Service prescriptions for the vegetation type and terrain at each location.

Trails and trailheads will remain open, but users should be aware that sawyer crews and vehicles will be in the area. Signage will be in place to notify trail users of the work being done.
