Your Tesla Is About To Get A Bunch Of Interface Changes With New Software Update - Forbes

It looks like Tesla is preparing to roll out a software update that will include a whole bunch of new functions and interface tweaks.

This is according to Teslascope, which tracks Tesla software updates and has just discovered an update that is currently being pushed out to cars used by Tesla employees. The update, which is referred to as 2023.12, includes what Teslascope describes as “a trove” of potential improvements to the user interface.

I say “potential” because, naturally, not every Tesla owner will want to see their interface modified. But if the report is accurate it looks like they’ll see a good selection of useful improvements to the interface, and crucially these are changes that can be tweaked to the driver’s preference, switched off, or ignored if they aren’t wanted.

Teslascope tweeted a list of the changes earlier today, plus images of the new interface and Tesla’s release notes explaining what the updates are. The first is a new option to pick from two text sizes, which could be handy for drivers who want to increase the font size of their Tesla system.

There’s also a new search function which aims to provide “quicker access to controls and settings,” Tesla’s release notes say. The new feature is found in Controls -> Search, and lets Tesla owners quickly search for a function, app or setting. This could be useful for when you want to tweak a vehicle setting but can’t remember which menu it’s hidden in.

The update also includes a new Points of Interest section to the maps app, where photos and reviews are displayed when you select a point of interest or a Supercharger station. The latter could be useful for understanding what the station looks like and exactly where the Supercharger bays are located.

Teslascope also revealed how the 2023.12 update includes a new interface for managing phone calls, the option for an audible chime when shifting gears, and a way for rear-seat passengers to adjust the front passenger seat from their touch screen. I can see this being particularly useful for Teslas that are used as taxis, when the rear-seat passenger might want extra leg room. Instead of asking the driver, they can tap at the rear-facing touch screen to move the empty seat forwards.

Yet another new function lets drivers change what the left scroll wheel on the steering wheel can do. Addressed to drivers, the release notes state: “You can adjust settings like brightness and Acceleration Mode, or perform actions like toggling the Camera App, opening the glovebox, and saving Dashcam footage.”

The notes also explain how a long press of the left scroll button brings up a list of functions to scroll through and operate with a press. Drivers can pick which options come up in this list by going to Control -> Display -> Scroll Wheel Function.

Lastly, the update brings Zoom Meetings to more regions and includes minor performance improvements, while Tesla’s voice recognition system now supports British English. As a Brit myself, I’m interested to see how well the system understands the many accents and dialects over here, and whether there are some fun Easter eggs to unearth if a British driver says something particularly eccentric. I suspect probably not, but it’s fun to imagine Tesla baking in some surprises triggered by Cockney rhyming slang.

As a final note, Teslascope says how it has heard from a European source that the new 2023.12 software update includes fixes for the “factory reset” bug which was only partially resolved in the 2023.6 update. Teslascope says the latest update should start to arrive for Tesla drivers in the US between one and six days from today, 10 April.
