Hikers, bikers, golfers hit the trails and courses again as LA County reopens outdoor spots - The Daily Breeze

It happened just in time: Golf courses, along with hiking and biking trails, across Los Angeles County opened back up Saturday, May 9, as temperatures began cooling down after the region’s second heat wave of 2020.

Folks who had been cooped up inside for weeks due to closures intended to stem the spread of the coronavirus were itching to get back outside.

County officials did not respond to requests for comment Saturday on whether they faced any issues with overcrowding at some of the area’s hotspots. But the scene at several popular trails and courses showed that even as people took advantage of the opportunity to get moving again, they respected — for the most part — calls to remain at least 6 feet from others.

Abiding by guidance to wear face coverings, however, was a different story.

At the Hillside Wilderness Preserve in Monrovia, the wide hiking trail made it easy for people to stay apart from each other, even as the path was fairly busy Saturday morning.

Crystal Murikami and her husband David were among the 50% or so of hikers at the preserve who were wearing masks; they said they thought covering their faces was important to be “conscientious of others.”

Before the pandemic, the Long Beach couple used to hike pretty regularly. So now that trails are open again, they drove up north to get outside again.

“We appreciate being out and about again,” David Murikami said.

Even at golf courses, where rules to wear face coverings may be easier to enforce, masks were present — but not ubiquitous.

Still, folks who showed up for tee time kept their distance and mostly seemed grateful for the opportunity to play again.

While teeing off at Wilson & Harding Golf Courses in Griffith Park, Christopher Warren said he had found ways to play while local courses were shut down — but it was nice to play a little closer to home.

“I’ve driven 50 miles twice in a week to play out towards Riverside,” he said, “and I live only 2 miles from here. So this course is home. I missed it.”

Compton resident Jerry Briscoe had been waiting for the day when he could pull out his clubs again.

Playing at The Links at Victoria in Carson, Briscoe said he appreciated the measures that staff had taken to reopen safely. A big printout of the golf course’s requirements was posted on the shop’s windows, so folks couldn’t mistake what was allowed — and what wasn’t.

”It’s all visible,” Briscoe said. “So they’ve done a great job of keeping us golfers safe.”

Further southeast, at the Linden H. Chandler Preserve in Rolling Hills Estates, Julie Hill and her two smalls kids drove out from Redondo Beach to take advantage of the chance to get back outside.

Hill worried the opportunity might not last long.

“My concern is that people won’t take the issues surrounding social distancing and being safe seriously,” she said, “and they’ll end up closing them again.”

But she knew she could only control her own family’s actions.

“As long as you’re just passing someone on the trail, it’s my understanding that it’s safe, as long as you’re wearing masks and you’re not lingering,” she said. “If you’re gonna hang out with people, then that’s when you’re exposing yourself.

“We’re not gonna do that,” she said.
