Some Wawas are letting customers pour their own coffee again - nj.com

New Jerseyans don’t want to pump their own gas, but they do want to pour their own coffee. And at the state’s favorite place for a pitstop, that’s slowly becoming a possibility again.

Wawa has reopened its self-serve coffee stations at select locations, allowing customers to pour their java and prepare it with creamer and sweetener however they like. The service was removed early in the coronavirus crisis to help stop the spread of the disease.

The Pennsylvania-based chain began “gradually” reopening its self-serving stations on May 11, Wawa spokesperson Lori Bruce told NJ Advance Media. Bruce emphasized that safety has been a priority for Wawa from the beginning of the crisis, and that these stations will allow for quicker trips to Wawa that help customers “get in and out faster to maximize social distancing.”

Wawa has resumed self-service for beverages at around 60 stores so far, Bruce said, in South Jersey near or in Cape May County as well as in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania’s Reading area. Wawa is hopeful it will be able to return the service to more locations in the coming weeks.

“So far, customer feedback on the return of self-service beverages with our enhanced safety measures has been very positive,” Bruce said. “Moving forward, Wawa will continue to gain feedback from associates and customers and incorporate findings into the reintroduction of self-service beverages to additional stores.”

Customers still have the option to have Wawa staff members pour and prepare their coffee at these locations.

“As you begin to rebuild your own routines, you may notice we have made a few changes, but that familiar Wawa feeling will always be there — to make you feel comfortable, connected and cared for,” Wawa president and CEO Chris Gheysens said on the store’s website.

Wrapped stirrers, tissue paper for customers to use while touching the pour handle, social distancing markers and the addition of the “Wawa Clean Force” -- employees dedicated to continually cleaning the store -- are among the additional safety precautions that have been implemented.

Wawa will reopen self-serve stations “while continuing to take into consideration all guidelines set forth by state and local Departments of Health,” Bruce added.
