Hulu launched an updated version of the app which is by far the largest redesign the app saw. The primary reason for this update was to enable and enhance easy and better navigation in order to have a better discovery of content. The redesign gives the app a more standardized navigation paradigm, now users of the app can navigate through the available collections vertically and search for content in a collection by scrolling horizontally.
Hulu’s interface now looks and feels a lot like the other OTT platforms, such as Netflix and Disney+. Hulu, with this update, will now also be providing better information regarding content recommendations.
“We listened to feedback from our viewers,”. Hulu Product Management Director Jason Wong and VP Jim Denney mentioned in their announcement, “And heard they loved how easy it was to continue watching the shows and movies they love but not as easy to discover new content.”

Hulu has also, through this update, made categories like “TV,” “Movies” and “Sports” shift to the top of the screen as it will make it convenient to choose and also scout the type of content viewers want to view.
Hulu also launched ‘Hulu’s Live TV experience’ along with rolling out this updated UI that simplifies the whole experience of using the app. ‘Hulu’s Live TV experience’ was quite the feature that distinctively set it apart from other streaming services but also one of the reasons why the interface was not user friendly. Hulu stated that this new updated interface will be available to some users on Roku and Apple TV devices and the update will finally be out formally in the next two months.
Viewers will now have the option which will appear as the “Keep Watching” section, it is a very basic and standardized UI feature in almost all OTT platforms. The main attention Hulu focussed was on the advanced recommendation of content, which primarily will have curated collections personalized for everyone according to their preferences.

Hulu was working on this update for almost a year and a half because it realised the need to have a more simple, systematic home screen interface which was similar to the other streaming platforms that their users were simultaneously streaming content on.
Hulu’s recommendation system is not based on algorithms to help viewers discover content better, they will be working with actual people who will be responsible to create that personalised content viewers would like to binge on. For example, if somebody enjoys sitcoms or romcoms, the team of experts designated to take very good care of the needs of users in terms of content consumption will put together recommendations for the same.
