Gov. Phil Murphy said he plans to announce on Thursday “a bunch more steps” to loosen near lockdown restrictions in the state heading into Memorial Day weekend, but they will involve “outside stuff.”

Meanwhile, key indicators that New Jersey is slowly winning its battle against the spread of the coronavirus continue to progress.

Officials on Wednesday announced 1,670 new positive test results and 168 more deaths, bringing the state’s totals to 150,399 total cases and 10,747 fatalities.

Hospitals reported 3,208 coronavirus patients, down from 8,084 patients at the peak on April 14. And there were 896 critical care patients and 700 people on ventilators as of 10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to state data

“These three data sets – hospitalizations, ICU and ventilator counts – are the most significant known metrics which influence our thinking about where we are on our road back," Murphy said during his daily coronavirus briefing in Trenton.

The governor didn’t say which outdoor activities he would address Thursday but he has promised guidance on how public and private pools should operate. And campgrounds are still waiting to hear if they will be allowed to reopen for the holiday weekend.

Parks and golf courses reopened May 2, and beaches, boardwalks and lakes are allowed to open by Friday with restrictions.

State police Superintendent Patrick Callahan said the owners of Atilis Gym received their third day of citations for violating the order and the state Department of Health could be next in assessing some sort of penalties or oversight. In an effort to allow more people to do their shopping from home during the coronavirus pandemic, New Jersey residents enrolled in the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be able to use their benefits to order groceries online starting next week, state officials announced Wednesday.
