Around East County: Pittsburg seafood fest canceled again this year - East Bay Times

Even though several online sources are promoting the annual Pittsburg Seafood Festival, which generally takes place the first weekend in September, leaders at the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce decided months ago that they would not be able to host the event this year.

Chamber officials explain that by the time the pandemic mandates were lifted throughout the state on June 15, it was really too late to pull together the event in a safe manner. Usually, the Seafood Festival committee members start planning the next yearly event a month or two after the previous event has ended. Chamber officials also say the cost of even starting to plan is a significant expense. They were hoping this past spring that they could begin planning. When no word about changes in the county mandate on large events opening again happened by April, however, the Chamber board decided to scrap the 2021 event and just hope for the best in 2022.

Had the group been able to organize a festival this year and last, it would have been its 37th year. The annual event helps more than 40 nonprofit organizations in Pittsburg with donations from proceeds for programs and activities. Aside from offering a large variety of seafood, the highly popular event usually hosts jet ski races, a bathtub race, kiteboarding demos and musical entertainment. In the meantime, Chamber officials hope to host a Christmas event this year and maybe a few other surprises. Car, motorcycle show: Somersville Towne Center’s space at 2550 Somersville Road in Antioch is once again being offered their for the “Cruising For a Cure” Car and Motorcycle Show. As in previous years, the proceeds will go to Relay For Life of the Delta. The event will take place Aug. 28.

“Relay for Life of the Delta is so excited to be able to have our annual car show,” said organizer Jamie Rackley. “We’re looking forward to great vendors and incredible cars. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.”

The event invites car, truck and motorcycle owners to show off their vintage models for public view. There will also be food, entertainment, raffles, vendors and photo spots. The Relay For Life of the Delta organization will offer lunch free for registered cancer survivors. Registering vehicles for the show costs $25 each. Entrants arrive at 8 a.m., and the show’s hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when awards will be given out. For more information, call Jamie at 925-499-8697.

Entrepreneur workshops: The city of Oakley is home to more than 700 businesses, more than 90% of which have fewer than five employees. Almost half of those businesses are home-based. Several years ago, the city started a program that offered classes to entrepreneurs, as well as an entrepreneur center where businesses could rent small office and meeting rooms. Originally just a few programs were offered to local businesses, but the program has been expanded with the help of Los Medanos College. New workshops this year will feature subjects such as business organization, including sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations; gorilla marketing and social media for business owners; and debt and equity financing.

Each of the programs featured is 90 minutes in a workshop setting sponsored by the Oakley Entrepreneur Program and at no cost to Oakley business owners. Each is designed to strengthen the small business and entrepreneur community and help them grow and expand in today’s economy. Class registration is through Los Medanos College.
