Rockies’ bullpen implodes — again — in late-inning loss to Cubs - The Denver Post

Too bad they don’t award points for creativity in the big leagues. If they did, the Rockies would be the clear front-runners.

Because they sure find inventive ways to lose baseball games on the road.

Monday night at Wrigley Field, the Rockies lost to the Cubs in brutal fashion as their bullpen suffered a major meltdown. The Cubs walked it off with a 6-4 win on Rafael Ortega’s two-run homer off a hanging slider by closer Daniel Bard.

The Cubs entered Monday’s game having lost 13 straight games at Wrigley Field — a franchise record for home infamy. They had been outscored 99-33, and had hit .199. But Monday night they were facing the road Rockies, who slid to 14-46 away from Coors Field.

Truthfully, the Rockies lost the game in an ugly eighth inning.

Veteran right-hander Jhoulys Chacin, who’s been one of Colorado’s most dependable relievers, walked the bases full on 12 consecutive balls.  All three of those batters — Ortega, Frank Schwindel and Ian Happ — came around to score off subsequent reliever Carlos Estevez as the Cubs tied the game, 4-4.

“That was an aberration, for me,” manager Bud Black said. “Jhoulys has been one of our most reliable relievers. He’s been throwing a ton of strikes.

“So that was a tough one for J.C. He’s been a valuable part of our ‘pen when we win games, but tonight it didn’t happen.”

Patrick Wisdom hit an RBI single up the middle off Estevez. David Bote bounced into a double play, but drove in a run, and then Micheal Hermosillo ripped an RBI double to tie up the game.

Behind a terrific performance from right-hander Antonio Senzatela and timely, early hits up and down the order, the Rockies looked like they were in complete command. Until, well, you know.

Senzatela — who entered the game with an 0-6 record, 5.80 ERA and .335 batting average against when pitching on the road — gave up one run on five hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked two.

His biggest pitch of the night was the 1-2 slider he threw to Bote in the sixth to induce a double play. The Cubs had jammed the bases, with no outs, on a single by Schwindel, a double by Happ and a walk by Wisdom. Senzatela’s slider to Bote allowed a run but minimized the damage.

“I felt like my slider was really good tonight,” Senzatela said. “That (pitch to Bote) was a slider, too, down and away.”

The Rockies provided Senzatela with a seemingly comfy cushion with a three-run first inning. Connor Joe led off with a double off veteran right-hander Kyle Hendricks and scored on Charlie Blackmon’s single. The big hit of the inning was a two-run single by Sam Hilliard.

Colorado tagged Hendricks for another run in the seventh, combining singles by Garrett Hampson and Rio Ruiz and a sacrifice fly to right by Joe.
