Northern Michigan restaurants prepare to reopen
Northern Michigan bar and restaurant owners are scrambling to prepare for the unofficial start to the Up North summer season this weekend now that the state has cleared the way for a partial reopening of dining rooms.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order Monday allowing bars and restaurants in the Upper Peninsula and the northern part of the Lower Peninsula to begin serving diners in a limited capacity Friday, more than two months since issuing a blanket ban on on-premise dining to help stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Though the step was cheered by the state’s largest restaurant trade group Monday, the quick and largely unexpected rollout has sown confusion and added another case of whiplash to weary operators who’ve already pivoted their business models to survive the pandemic.

Whitmer: I had 'conversation' with Biden campaign about vice presidency
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has had "a conversation with some folks" connected to former Vice President Joe Biden's campaign about being his running mate, but stopped short of saying she is being seriously vetted for the job, she told a TV audience Tuesday.
Responding to a question put to her on NBC's "Today" show about whether the vetting to be Biden's vice presidential nominee has begun, Whitmer mentioned the conversation briefly before quickly adding, "All of my energy is going into this crisis," referring to the coronavirus pandemic which has killed nearly 5,000 people in Michigan since March.

Secretary of State: All Michigan voters will get absentee ballot applications at home
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said Tuesday all of Michigan's 7.7 million registered voters will be mailed absentee ballot applications so they can take part in elections in August and November without the risk of in-person voting if they choose to do so.
Benson, in a move likely to anger some Republicans and potentially lead to a court battle, said the threat posed by the spread of coronavirus, which has already killed 4,915 Michiganders since March but has been on the decline in recent weeks, is still too great to consider having people go en masse to the polls to vote in the Aug. 4 and Nov. 3 elections.
