SAN FRANCISCO — Dylan Bundy’s disappointing season isn’t getting any better.

Bundy gave up four runs on three homers in the Angels’ 6-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Monday afternoon, raising his ERA for the season to 6.49.

“It’s not good,” Bundy said. “It’s embarrassing.”

Bundy, who had a 3.29 ERA last season, said he still believes he can get himself turned around.

“I’m confident,” he said. “I’m still confident in my pitches and shapes of my pitches and my ability to get these guys out. Just a rough stretch. It’s not good right now and it’s not fun.”

Bundy pitched well in spring training and he had a 3.32 ERA after three starts and a respectable 4.00 ERA after six starts.

It’s been the last four – two of which he pitched through an ankle problem that he says is now resolved –that have changed the outlook on his season. He has allowed 21 earned runs in his last 15-1/3 innings.

The good work he did in March and April give Maddon hope that May was just a fluke.

“I have so much faith and confidence in him,” Maddon said. “He could set the tone for the entire staff. He did it before. He did it earlier this year. And I still believe it’s in there. He’s not hurting right now. I thought overall, the stuff was better today.”

On the bright side, Bundy made it into the sixth inning today, which he hadn’t done in any of his last three starts. If he’d have retired Mauricio Dubon with two outs in the sixth instead of giving up a solo homer, he might have had a quality start.

Bundy did not allow a run in the first three innings, and one of the two hits he allowed was a blooper.

In the fourth, though, he walked Alex Dickerson and then threw a first-pitch fastball over the inner half of the plate to Evan Longoria, who drilled it over the left-field fence to put the Giants up, 2-1.

An inning later, LaMonte Wade Jr. also jumped on a first-pitch sinker and hit it over the right field wall.

In the sixth, Bundy gave up a third homer, on a 3-and-2 hanging slider, to Dubon, putting the Angels in a 4-1 hole.

“None of them were technically where you want them,” Bundy said of the home run pitches. “You gotta throw everything on the edges nowadays, so none of them were where I wanted them.”

Bundy has allowed 12 homers this season, after giving up just five last year.

Meanwhile, the Angels hitters managed just that single run in seven innings against veteran right-hander Johnny Cueto. One of the Angels’ six hits actually came from Bundy, who was batting for the first time since 2019.

After the third inning, the Angels had only two hits and two at-bats with a runner in scoring position.

“Cueto was Cueto today,” Maddon said. “I’ve seen that a lot of times. But I also thought Dylan was going to stay with him step for step, and it didn’t happen.”
